Default OEM vs Aftermarket tail light assemblies

Hi all, new to this forum. I need to replace my right tail light assembly on a 1990 240 sedan and have found OEM parts in the neighborhood of $200, aftermarket parts for roughly half that. Calling the vendors, they don't give me a good answer as to what I'm getting for the higher priced OEM, or what i give up with the lower price aftermarket. Any advice from this list?

Same question for the left front corner lens... though that price difference is not too much.

And forgive me if this is a repeat thread--I browsed through the list but couldn't find this topic. If it's already answered, please direct me to the post.

Thanx, all, in advance...

Hi, and welcome,

In most cases I'd rather have a used or re-conditioned OEM than an aftermarket. Short of the clouding issue with the 240 lens, there's not a lot reasons to go with new with so much used out there. but that's just IMO and the nice thing about a forum is the wisdom of the crowd.

I used an aftermarket light. There really wasn't much of a difference. You could see that the quality wasn't as great, but its just a light. Theres no moving parts so theres not much to worry about. Ebay has some really cheap lights. http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trk...All-Categories

I just replaced both headlight assemblies with OEM. Expensive, yes. But you can't beat the quality. They were 15% off and free shipping. So it pays to watch for sales. I expect them to last 23 years, as the originals did.
