Default oil filter/drain leaks

92 Volvo 240. My oil filter leaks. I have tried cleaning the mating surface thoroughly and putting a thin layer of clean oil on the filter seal but it still seems to leak. The oil drain plug also seems to leak a little even with a fresh crush washer. Any tricks to getting these guys leak free?

Kind of embarrassing but I attacked this problem in the wrong order. As the oil was collecting at the bottom of the bellhousing I assumed it was the rms and changed that out. It did not look very leaky though so I don't think it was the problem after all. So now I am on to the simple stuff Oh well, I learned a lot and got a new clutch in at the same time.

How tight are they now?
Tighen up the filter a little bit.

Do you have oil leaking any where else?
What is the condition of the PCV system?

Have your oil seperator aka (breather box) and flame trap (pcv) checked. Sounds like you may have pressure built up...other than that no real tricks just make sure to use a Volvo OEM filter(Mann) tighten a bit more than hand tight and either flip the washer over at each oil change or use a new one and make it nice and tight, make sure you're not cross threading the drain plug. Also, you really should be checking your flame trap(pcv) every 5,000 miles or so. However, you will most likely need a mechanic to check your oil seperator aka (breather box) unless you know what you're looking for...hope this helps...

Thanks guys. I already checked the flame trap and hoses and removed and cleaned out the oil breather box. PCV should be in great shape now and it was still leaking after all that. That was the first thing I tried. I am starting think that replacing the rms solved my major problem as I have had no drip spots since changing it. woohoo.
