Default OK 1st question ???

I need to replace my flame trap and the hoses that go with it. (1989 240DL, automatic) I'm also gonna replace the oil trap that it connects to. It is coated in sludge. I'm planning to take off the throttle body to give it a good cleaning. Should I just go ahead and take off the intake manifold also to have better access to the flame trap and the oil trap? Or is taking off the intake just over kill ? When I take off the oil trap will it spill oil? If so how much? Any tips from Volvo guys with experience in this would be greatly appreciated.

The Vent box might not come out without removing the intake.
be careful pulling it out there is a shaft coming out of the bottom of the box.

The shaft coming out the bottom of the box will it stay in the engine block? Or will it come out with box? Is this shaft something that I can just clean and reinstall? Could the vent box also be cleaned up, new o-ring and reinstalled? Or is it better to just replace? How should I becareful? If the shaft slips and fall would it fall into the crank case forcing me to drop the oil pan? I appreciate any more tips you might have.

Thanks

No it is really like a tab sticking out of the bottom of the vent box.
You need to pull the vent bix straight up to remove it.

Cleaning should be fine unless it feels really heavy. That would mean it is clogged.
Install new o-ring and a touch of silicone sealer and reinstall

If the tab breaks I hear you do need to drop the pan to retreive. I have never broke one I always remove the intake to get it out.
