i haven't changed one on a 240, but the last one I changed (a 1991 mercedes 300e), I used an open end wrench, and didn't have to remove anything.

Man, that was hard! I ended up pulling the whole section of exhaust off the car, clamping it in my bench vice, using tons of PB Blaster, a bicycle seat post on the end of a large pair of vice grips (as a leverage arm) , and a blow torch to heat everything up - before the darn thing would budge.

Putting the new one on was pretty hard as well.

All done. Time for a beer and then a drive!

I ran into the same problem on my 1991 740 turbo. Socket was out of the question, and the wrench (22mm) had no room in the cramped space to do its job. Mind you a 22mm wrench is a big one.

I had two 22mm wrenches so I cut one in half and it worked like a charm. I could have removed parts, but what for?

man, on the 1991 benz 300E, it was an *EASY* job. remove the passenger carpet/foor piece (snaps into the benz), the wire connectors are right there for testing. push the grommet through the body and feed the wires out, jack a corner of the car up a bit for easier access and it was right there for easy open end wrench access. a bit of antiseize on the new one, carefully applied so it couldn't touch the sensor tip, hand start it, hand tighten and 1/4 turn with the wrench, feed wires back through hole, put the grommet in place, plug into connector on passenger floor, replace floor panel, done. 15 minutes the first time I did one.
