Default Please help with radio problem

The radio in my '89 740GL isn't working right. It's the factory radio, and there's just static all the time. I thought the antenna was the cause since it was missing, but upon installing a new one, the problem hasn't changed. Every rare once in a while it will work, but as soon as I hit a bump, it goes back to static. The funny thing is, if I hit the center armrest or slam it down, it will bring the reception back in, but only for a short while, then it goes back to static. Tapes work great, just the radio has static. Any ideas of what's wrong?

Have you checked the wire that runs from the antenna to the back of the radio? It could be that it's loose, so when you go over bumps it's shifted and will therefore change the reception. I had a similar problem with my radio.

As a matter of fact, I did take the radio out and check all connections behind it, and all were ok.

Sounds like the main wire from the Antenna to the Radio is bad.

I suppose that's a nightmare to fix. And where could I get a new one?

I think radio shack will be the best place to get one.

I had the same problem with a ford truck. The wire kept dropping off the bottom of the antenna. The aftermarket replacement was one piece and ended the problem. A tree in a storm took the one from my 740. It wasnot that bad to replace. I just took my time. I have a wagon so it maybe different.

On my 960, it is only the FM stattion which has the same problem as you had. Since then, I became a very relious man. Simply cross my finger and pray for Allah, God, Lord to bring it back to life. Most often my prayersare answered after few minuts of hesitations.
