Default proud new owner of a 1990 240, but...

when i start the car, the service light is on. i know how to reset it and thats no problem.
but when i drive it for a few minutes
all of the dash lights come on,
i was told it may be a crank shaft pulley
or an alternator.
the heating fan squeeks like a mof when its turned on
and something in the air conditioning system has a crack.
otherwise the car is straight

are these BIG DEALS?

i can understand the alternator being priority
but how much is this car gonna cost me?!
help!!!

The Rev240, Get a volt meter and check your alter. should be putting out 14-14.5 volts, if to many replace your regulator (around 25$). You should be getting 14 at the battery. If it is low you brushes could be going bad. Rebuilt alt. around 150$. Brush replacement is not to bad on chevy or ford, never tried Volvo. The pully is a 2 part rubber in the middle, to see if it is bad mark a line across the 2 pieces and after driving for awhile check the mark and see if the line seperated. Hope the Volvo gives you many miles of sevice and joy.

Rev- Hey my fan motor on my 89 240 did the same thing. You might not like to hear it, but your gonna have to replace that motor. Type in 240 Volvo blower fan replacement on Google, theres a site how to do it. i'll just say- I'ts not an afternoon project. maybe an entire saturday. You can do it. your hands will be covered in band aids, but it can be done. Dave

the blower fan in my 740 makes a whole lot of noise like the cage has come off the motor. Is this a 'envolved job like in the 240? I am still trying to get this thing running so this is on my list. I have fire now but no fuel to the injectors...

well im getting the car checked out tomorrow because as i was driving home, my dash lights came back on, and my stereo flickered.
i dont want to be stranded.
its almost worth buying the battery to get there
and be a little safer.
but batteries are espensiff.
but the alternator is too
a lot of work for love. but hopefully ill get it done with no problems

how much is it for a blower fan if i have to replace it.
do i have to take off the dash?

Rev- My fan was $38 at Autozone, the top of the dash stays put, but everything on the bottom comes out- guages, ducting, console. It's way up in there. The back of your car will be FULL of dash pieces. I sealed up all the duct seams with aluminum duct tape. Try to keep track of the all of the little spring clips!! Dave
