1990 740 gl poor m.p.g.
i got 90 740 g.l.
engine codes
i know its in limp home mode cuz of codes
thats why poor m.p.g.
runs o.k. when cold except m.p.g.
car wont run at idle when warm ( limp mode) i think
runs the same after reset b4 codes come back and after
changed plugs , wires, f.p.r., t.p.s., m.a.f.
main codes 2-1-3 1-1-3 2-3-2 1-2-1
2-1-3 tps signal faulty at full load (voltage ok, ground ok)
1-1-3 fuel trim (lambda control) too lean/rich
2-3-2 adaptive fuel trim too lean/rich at idle
1-2-1 maf sensor burn off signal absent or faulty (voltage good , ground ok)
i put some money at this thing for parts and some
time of work and i still got same problem
if any had same problem and fix it you advice would be good 2 me
thanks , j....

RE: 1990 740 gl poor m.p.g.
Hopefully Bill from Durham will give you some direction on this.
I would take a guess at coolant sensor, cheap to get a new onebut its a beaach to get at so better wait.
HAve you checked the throttle position switch with a voltmeter?

Is the 113 the O2 sensor?

RE: 1990 740 gl poor m.p.g.
thanks 4 the reply
i havent checked the ect yet but i have chaecked the mas ,and tps
voltage and ground within spec. replaced em with known good (new) part just to verify.
it would seem that the computer thinks that these sensors arent working properly but they are. i dont know if if i adjusted the tps rpoperly but i will get on that aswell as check out the ect. maybee egr too i can run a vacuum test on the dyno and check for smog.
im a mechanic and ive done all i canfollowing alldata suggestionswithout the breakout box checking all the grounds to test ecu.
but if i cant fix this problem within the next few trys im gonna take to dealer and hopefully they can tell me exactly what the problem with a reasonble price. it just sucks taking my own car to the dealer cuz i dont have some crazy sweedish diagnostic tool at my shop.
thanks , J............

The TPS sensor is not adjustable. You check it with a voltmeter while moving the throttle from the idle to the 'wide open throttle' position, looking for a slow rise in voltage.
Another sensor that works with all of the ones you've mentioned is the manifold air pressure sensor. I'd check that and if that turns out O.K., you may have a bad ECM.

actually the tps is adjustable ,and there isnt any such m.a.p. sensor this vehicle has a m.a.f. (mass air flow)sensor.
oh yeah the t.p.s. has two functionsdepending on which wire1.(twoorange wires)idle control, and 2.(single red/white wire) fuel inrichment which is determined by w.o.t. signal that is supposed to go from 12v. down to .020v at w.o.t. // the idle control is supposed to increase yes from .20v to 12v. and the ground wire in the middle of course.
and the problem im having with thethe idle control is voltage is reading 0.0v and only goes to 10.60v and the w.o.t. is staying at 12v. which yes should be caused by a bad ground in e.c.u.

also the car starts and runs better now cold or warn because i adjusted the t.p.s.
i removed the air boot loosened the t.p.s. and with my trusty feeler guages .15mm, and .45mm i stuck the .45 in the t.b. open and let it close on the guage then i moved the t.p.s around till i heard it click then i moved it back just slightly so i could open and close the throttleon the guage so that the t.p.s. didnt click any more. then i got the .15mm stuk it in there heard the clisk tighten it down and she runs and stays runnin now but still got codes and poor gas milage. my next venture will be replacin the ecu hoping that fix problem
thanks to all who offer advice i appreciate it ......... j.

o.k. so $50 fixed it i doubled my gas mileage just by swapin ecm # 0 280 000 556 at
pick n pull auto wreckers. the t.p.s. adjustment fixed the idle cold / warm. now my only problem is a big fat cloud of smoke when i romp on doin 60+. i gonna change the oil/filter, plugs againor maybee just clean em. smog it get the permanent tags. this car is decent so if the smoke dont go away i might change out the rings. i cant tell what color the smoke is so i dont know if its blow by or still too much gas . so fingers crossed oil change will fix it, cause of contaminated oil. hopefully.... i dont want to drop the pan .
thanks to all 4 input .....
lone viking some of ur info was correct at least what matterd that is so sorry if i put u off this is an awesome site ,good people.
i hope these posts help someone else .
