Default Question on a 1988 240 DL

Hi, I just purchased a 1988 240 DL. It is an automatic and on the shifter it has a button on the side, when I press it, a red arrow on my dashboard shows up right under the fuel gauge. What does this mean?

Here is the owner's manual for an '86 which is similar.

The lighted arrow means the overdrive is OFF.

Default OD switch

Sometimes I drive all the way, (6 mi) to work with the OD turned off, like if we have a lot of snow, or for a mild downshift to cut down my braking down a hill. Dave

...since we have no snow or hills down here, I always wondered what that was for. I thought trailer towing...if I had a hitch.
