question about power steering
Just a question about power steering on a 91 240dl i am looking at to purchase. the seller says it needs power steering tubing replace. Is this an easy fix? I do have mechanical knowledge and repair my cars regularly. but never a volvo. I didnt think the thing had power steering to start with.
It all depends on what tubing is leaking. Stangely enough, last fall I purchase a '91 240 and it had power steering problems. The tubing on the steering rack had rusted through. This is something that I couldn't find any replacement. They all said that I had to replace the entire rack.
If it is simply the tubing running from the power steering pump down to the rack, this isn't too difficult to replace but these aren't cheap. If I remember correctly they run about 70-80$ apiece - and there is two of them.
Fortunately for me, I had a parts car. You could try the junkyard.

let me ask this.....because the car is about 150 miles away would there be a chance in causing any further damage to the pump or rack if i were to drive it back to my home?
When I first got my volvo the mechanic said the steering rack was shot, they wanted to replace everything for $700. They said when the rack or a component wears out the pump has to work harder and its better to replace everything.
Anyway, 3 yrs later and I'm still driving the original rack.
Figga about $400-500 to replace everything in a worst case scenario.
Volvo's are simpe to work on at least.

I doubt that driving 150 miles would do any damage to the rack. Does the power steering work at all? If not, you need to be careful driving as it isn't too easy to steer without the power assist. I did drive mine home without power sterring, but it was only like 35 miles. I avoided any interstates and took mainly side streets.
