I have noticed lately that when I accelerate I hear a rattle sound in the engine compartment. No change in the car performance, just a rattle sound.

any ideas

Volvo installed several heat shields in the engine compartment and on the exhaust system. Over the years these tend to work loose or corrode around the mounting bolts allowing them to vibrate.

My 240, 740 and 940 all had this problem. Check as many as you can see.

 

the engine may also be knocking due to something called detonation, do to timing being to advanced...my 740 does this...it depends if its comming from inside the engine or somthing rateling on the car.

 

After a long and frustrating period i had a vibration which i could not find, then i did. that was a good day.

i have a b230, there was a pipe running off the A/C dryer/cannister which runs down the the chassis and goes to the condenser or something, besides the point. where this pipe meets the chassis, the vibration would cause contact, creating the quite annoying and demeaning sound. i added a used brake vacuum hose to the immediate area around the A/C pipe, this completely fixed the issue.
