Default Sagging 240 Driver Footwell Cover

So, that awful carpet stuff which sits above your feet, under the steering wheel. I can't find any info on ways to get it to stay up when it starts sagging. I don't know if I'm missing screws or clips or if something tore, but my toes constantly rub it when I shift from brake to accelerator.

Anyone have a solution to sagging driver side footwell cover?

Thanks!

what year 240? on our 87, its held up by these plastic 1/4 turn snap-clip things. 2-3 of them go into the firewall above the pedals, and 3-4 of them into the bottom of the dashboard.

these: Volvo Under Dash Felt Retainer 105700 1304376 1247572

Thanks pierce! Unfortunately I have a 1992 airbagged car, so the "near seat" end of the cloth seems ...only held up by the knee bolster? No clips.

there aren't any oblong holes, about 1/2 x 1/4", in the bottom or back of the knee bolster?

let me look in the parts catalog... hm, it doesn't really show these felt kick panels. there's a 'flat panel', LH is 1304196 and RH is 1304197... a note on the '92 page says "with airbag: Sound Wall, LH 1364351" but nothing is shown.

I could check again, but I've had that bolster off a dozen times for various things. It's all foam and vinyl all the way, from what I recall.

Theres a lot of metal support rods around the steering column, behind that bolster, but I couldn't tell you if there were specific holes for those medallion clips like the rest of the carpet uses... too many holes up there. And I know I never had clips. The first time I ever removed it, the felt piece just kind of... fell out of that part with the bolster off.

Gotta love the "minor part, lets not get into it" vein of catalog writing.

The felt panels are usually held on by two clips as Pierce describes down by the pedals. I believe the end of the felt up by your knees is just tucked under the knee bolster. It's been a while since I had mine apart and I am going by memory. Can't look at the car as the kids have it out christmas shopping.

Default Designed without clips

So yep. Seems in airbag cars Volvo just didn't bother anchoring the driver's side felt by your knees. Problem being of course that without an anchor, sag over time has nothing to prevent it from slipping down.

I'll see about either trying to adhere some sort of reinforcement along the right side of the felt, or zip ties up by the knees to tension the felt.

the central air vent should hold it up fairly well, too, as long as the 'ring' is stretched around it so it can't slip off.

That rubber ring, maybe mine's loose/old. What size is it supposed to be?

It's a big fat rubber band. The rubber itself is around 1/3 to 1/2" in diameter. It fits snugly around the under dash heater vent. For a reference, look at the passenger side. If it is missing there then I suggest looking in a junkyard.

Update:

Zip tied the top edge of the cover to the metal frame of the steering column, under the knee bolster. Cinched tightly, this pulls the loose right side of the felt footwell cover high enough to clear my toes.
