I have this horrible brake squeal going on with my front discs (well it sounds like the front) whereby I can be heard 2 miles away. my family know i'm on my way home 5 mins before i arrive! I have replaced front pads and had the discs machined but to know avail. they will will screech at all speeds - even when moving inch by inch. my mechanic tells me that cuts can be placed in the discs (but only done in a certain way) that may stop it.

is this a common 740 problem or is it just a general issue because asbestos is no longer used in pads?

any ideas on fixing this problem

Are they Volvo parts?

If not then try Volvo pads they are pretty soft and rarely ever squeel.
Also Volvo rotors don't like to be turned and that migth also cause it to squeel.
