Default Shake, rattle, and roll.

Hello fellow Volvo drivers,

A developing condition is calling for correction with my 740T. I'm noticing high-frequency vibrations when accelerating or coasting from higher RPMs. The sound, as best as I can describe now, makes the Volvo sound like a tractor. More specifically if there was an engine, which creates vibration naturally and you put a thin sheet of metallic substance in contact you would most likely hear a tapping sound.
And so, after reading a little upon the matter it came to my attention to check/replace header gaskets, to tighten the exhaust heat shields, and an item regarding the transmission-to-exhuast support bracket. Well, ok,i'm all for the replacing te gaskets, but i have no idea where the exhuast heat shield(s) is/are, and what's this about the support bracket.
However, back to the case in hand, does anyone know at all what i'm talking about or this issue?

thank you for any feedback.

Default RE: Shake, rattle, and roll.

For the time being forget the gaskets.

The exhaust heat shields are simply pieces of thin metal bolted on at points where the exhaust system is close to places like the floor pan to protect them from excessive heat. Examples that spring readily to mind will be above the silencers (mufflers) and others will be in the engine compartment around the exhaust manifold area. These are usually shaped to the part of the exhaust system they cover and do come loose as the vehicle ages, usually because of corrosion of the shield/retaining bolts. Have a good look under the car and in the engine area to find them all.

The transmission to exhaust bracket is just that. It is a bracket which fastens onto one of the gearbox bell housing bolts and to the exhaust pipe. It does break, again due to corrosion. Check the exhaust pipe near to the bell housing and you will find it or its remains if it has broken.

The cat Converter might be bad.

Maybe.

Did you tap on the Cat Converter and see if it makes noise? (Only do it when the car is COLD.)
