Default Speedo/Odo Redux

93 240 wagon: There are 3 wires running to the 'L' connector which attaches to the speedo in the cluster: Blk, Blu and striped. What are they?
Does the odo get its impetus to work mechanically from the speedo drive or does it get an electrical impulse seperately from the speedo? In other words, if the speedo works and the odo doesnt, is it mechanical or could it be electrical?
Any help appreciated.

The same reply as in the General Chat forum:

Black - earth (ground).
Blue- ignition switch.
Green/white - speed sensor mounted on rear axle.

The only electrical impulse is to the speedo. The odometer has plastic gear wheels which often break.

So it is safe to say, that if the speedo is working, and it is working great, that the problem must be mechanical within the unit. I have replaced the gears to no avail. The problem is intermitent, but the speedo ALWAYS works. What other kind of mechanical problem could it be? Or am I missing sometjhing whith the "gear" thing?
