Default speedo signal broken at rear diff

so while I was replacing the rear shocks on my '89 740 I noticed some loose hanging wires around the rear differential. I figured out that the wires were for the speedo which then explained why my speedo always sat at 0 mph.

My question is this....can i order some replacement wire...splice it with whats under the car...wrap it in electrical tape...plug in into the rear diff and have my speedo work again?

And hello to you all...

hopefully, 'splice' means solder rather than just twist together, and I'd use heat-shrink tubing rather than electrical tape.
