Station Wagon surges in idle and stalls in gear
So here is the whole story,
It started with just stalling at lights. Then it would stall whenever it wanted, quite frequently.
I have replaced the fuel pump, fuel filter, air filter, mass airflow sensor, spark plugs, and alternator.
On a side note I have trace amounts of oil in my air intake.
The guys at the shop said it was the mass airflow sensor, and wanted to charge me over 500 bucks to fix it. I ordered the part myself for a little over 100, and changed it in 5 minutes. They also mentioned it had a weak signal coming from the ignition.
I just don't know if I can trust someone who wanted to charge that much for two screws and a bolt. Anyway I found myself at a dead end here.
My next theories are to replace spark plug wires, and the PVC valve, but this is just my shot in the dark approach.
Any ideas? it's a 1983 Volvo 245 GL it's before they put in the Diag computers...

So...you purchased a brand new amm for $100? Do they have any more? I'll take 6. The reason they were asking $500 is a. it was a new/reman unit that has a warranty and b. they want to fix the problem the first time. Yes ,it is simple to swap out but if you truly did it in 5 minutes I'll bet the air box bracket did not get reattached...that takes 4 more minutes. The simplest test for an amm is to simply unplug it...the car should run...but appreciably worse...it's called the limp home mode. If running does not change and the running is crap whether connected or not, probably not the amm. With a manual, you can check the volts at the amm to see if it's in specs. Sounds to me it's idling too low...have you tried idling the speed up at the throttle body? It's the big black knurled ****...also may have a vac leak...

I have tried to adjust the idling speed, however it doesn't seem to change at all when i turn it. Is it possible that the idler has gone out?
I have checked all of my hoses for a vacuum leak using a spray bottle filled with soap and water.
I was wondering if whatever is causing this issue could be related to the oil that seems to be making it's way into the air intake.
On a side note, the Mass Airflow Censor set me back about 130, but I did get 45 for bringing in my old one.
When I do disconnect my mass airflow censor the engine will really surge even worse. I placed my hand near the air intake and it appears that it is almost gasping for air.
