Hello all,

Posting again about my 1990 Volvo 740 gl. b230f bosch

I've just finished a couple of things on my Volvo, namely:

-Replaced the intake manifold gasket
-Cleaned EGR
-Cleaned IAC
-Replaced PCV system

The work has done wonders for the engine shake, I still cannot believe how still it sits in the engine bay now.

The problem, however, is the car now makes a strange rattling/grinding sound that sounds like its coming from around the belts up front. My guess is a bad pulley but I am a complete amateur; this is my first car.

I took a video and uploaded it to Youtube. It's not great camera work but it has (somewhat) decent audio so I'll link it below (hopefully I'm not violating rules here!)

To me it sounds like heat shield rattle. Check the shield that is bolted to the exhaust that the preheater hose is connected. I have removed the shield on my 240 as the rattling was driving me nuts.

 

Dont remove that shield if you're in California, as presence of the the preheater hose is checked as part of smog inspection. Since you have EGR, I'm guessing you likely are in California.
