So was driving, and then loss of power to engine, but all other electrical was fine. Opened hood to look around, noticed the round plug connected to to 3 wire cable coming out of the distributor was literally up against the body of distributor. Something happened inside that allowed the hall sensor plate (or whatever you'd call the pick up assembly) to spin along with the dizzy shaft, wrapping the wires up like a hose reel. When I bought the car 10 years ago, and I did tune up like new cap, rotor, wires, plugs, I noticed the little plastic block that should be on the cable and locks into the distributor body to keep elements out, was missing. Perhaps from PO using an aftermarket pickup or something? Anyway, not wanting to get moisture, etc in there, I just put a piece of foil tape over it, and it's been that way for the last 10 years with no issue. From what I can see online, the pickup assembly isn't really something available. Even if it was, looks like you have to pull the dizzy gear and remove shaft etc to even get in there. I pulled the rotor, and dust cap, and below that is another shiny ring (trigger or something...not sure of terms, not a distributor expert although I've upgraded and replaced them in the past in my other vehicles). that appeared to be held in place with a snap ring. Pulled snap ring, but that ring (see image) wouldn't budge, even after pb blaster soak. That's when I looked online to find it has to probably be disassembled from the bottom end. I'm thinking a good used dizzy would probably be the easiest and cheapest fix. There is one I can get for about $100, although I haven't seen it. From what I can tell, the "round plug" type like mine must not be from many years...as I just don't see them. Most have a square type connector that is attached into the distributor body itself...as opposed to cable and round plug style.
Questions: Is my best bet to swap with used dizzy and be done with it? Should I try to pull it, take it apart, and see if it can be repaired/soldered/etc. Sounds like I would need to knock out bottom pin, remove gear, pull shaft from top, and get into the body of it. I should also point out, this distributor has not vacuum advance can on it, nor vac line going anywhere, etc. Just a simple bosh distributor. It's a fuel injected car, so I'm assuming all advance must be controlled by ECM or an ICM, etc. as opposed to mechanical or vacuum. Another question, does it have to be exact distributor from my year that matches exactly down to the round wire plug, etc? Or are there options to swap in a distributor from say an 85 etc with the square connector, and get a matching engine bay plug side to match and splice, etc. Both plug styles appear to be a 3 wire setup. Not sure if same color of wires, same purpose, setup, etc. Any help sorting this out would be greatly appreciate!
