Default Surging 240

I have an 88 245 dl the car seems to be surging , it happens more commonly when I come off a stoplight than another time but it will happen when im just going down the highway or interstate. By "surging" i mean that the car falls flat on it's face then picks back up and accelerates normally. From what i have been able to tell this is directly contributed to the in tank pump? Thank you for any insight you could offer for me.

could be a long list of things. impossible to just say what it is by you just saying this/asking. one could guess and you may or may not throw unneeded parts at it.

Test data is need from accurate tests performed properly, condition and age of parts, etc.

I've never been clear on the term surging when people use it to describe what their engine is doing. I think hesitating is the term I've heard used. You hit the gas and the car boggs down, then picks back up. Like in the old days when accelerator pumps died in carbs. I would tune the car up.

You can clean and adjust the throttle body. That's easy and cheap. You can check the plugs for wear and replace the wires. Maybe even a new cap a rotor for the distributor. Do you know if or when these things have been looked into before?

indeed. hesitation under throttle can be caused by all sorts of things, including flakey vacuum hoses, dying AMM, throttle position sensors, low or erratic fuel pressure, etc etc etc. randomly replacing parts hoping to find the cause is a lousy way to diagnose anything.

I'm with titanjoe on the definition. to me, surging is when the engine 'hunts' under mild steady throttle. i have a motorcycle that does that, acts like the throttle is being twisted up and down a notch every few seconds, but only does this at steady speeds at medium low RPMs.

I guess hesitation would be a better way to describe it , I will see what a full tune up does for it. Thank you all for the suggestions.
