so my car is in storage and I ran it to get the oil circulating and to charge the battery so I got it up to temp and after around 5 mins, I snapped a pic of the temp gauge and then within 1 minute, the temp gauge went from nothing to at operating temp (in pics). is this normal? and if not what's the issue?
its not a true temp gauge, there's a 'hysteresis' circuit behind it that centers the needle of the engine is anywheres near normal operating temp it won't budge from dead center until the engine is getting too hot, then it will jump up to the beginning of the red zone
that is a strange design... I'll take your word for it. thank u

its pretty common. all my volvos, my VWs, and Ford trucks have had the same thing. about the only car I can think of with a needle that reads in degrees is my 1993 Mercedes E series.
I've heard tit was done to reduce nuisance service calls, where people would complain their engine is running too hot or whatever.
