Default Tranny dipstick. Long or short one?

Hello! Just purchased a 92' 240 wagon. It has a 89' rebuilt motor with what I was told was the original tranny. Tag says AISIN model 03-70.

Here is my question. Car had a dipstick in the tube with another in the car. One is longer than the other. There is approximately a 4.5 inch difference. Which tranny dipstick goes with the car? Long one or short? Thanks to who reply.

there should be two dipsticks, one for the engine oil, the other for the tranny fluid.

Thats an AW70 transmission, nice rugged tranny made by Toyota's transmission division, and used on a number of mid 80s RWD larger toyotas as well as all the later 240s and 740/940s nonturbo (the turbos used AW71 which was a beefed up version).

I'd have to measure my 240's dipsticks to tell you.

ok, red round handle, says 'Engine', stick is 23.25" long (from the flange to the tip, I didn't measure the handle)

yellow square handle, with a plastic end, 18" long from flange to tip, is the tranny. its dipstick tube is farther to the drivers side and back and lower than the engine tube.

Yep, that'd be where they go...

Thanks for the reply guys! Maybe I was not clear enough in my post, but I'm not confused as to which is oil and tranny. I have 2 tranny dipsticks. So Pierce, yours was 18" from flange to end? That would be the shorter one. Thanks for measuring for me.

Thing is though.. I met a guy (Joe) at the junkyard and he has a longer one in his 240. Anyone else have any input?

my 240 is a 87 240GL Sedan. any automatic 240 after the earliest 80s has the AW70 transmission, so a longer vs a shorter dipstick would only work if the dipstick tube was longer vs shorter. as I said, the transmission tube on my car is lower than the engine tube, also back and to the left (relative to the car, not the viewer)

hmm. for 87, VADIS says the dipstick and tube are one part#, and gives

* 1220295 for the B230F w/ the AW70
* 1220067 for the D24 (Diesel) w/ the BW55 [ok, diesels had a different gearbox]

a 93 gas has the same PN as above (and there's no diesel)
a 1983 with the AW70 has the same PN dipstick. note, there's a lot of other engines and trannies possible in an 83.

so I dunno where that longer stick is from, maybe a 740 which also used the same transmission? [my 740 isn't here or I'd go measure it]

I'm the one Brodysdad met in the wreck yard, which is rapidly becoming my second home. As he said, he has two tranny (yellow handle) dipsticks, a long and a short. I measured the one in my '89 240 wagon and got 21", measuring from the bottom of the yellow part to the tip. Then, out of curiosity, I pulled the one out of my '91 740 turbo and got 16.5" measuring the same way.

So, now we're wondering which one goes where. Since we're talking about 20 year old cars, with multiple owners, no way of knowing if someone swapped one out at some point and put in the wrong one. Clearly, the short one will go in the deep hole; don't know if the reverse is true. I'm gonna try to measure the tube on both cars, logically the long stick should go in the longer tube. Plan C is to call the parts dept. at the dealer and see if they know which is which. I'm wondering if I have a short one in my 740 because it's an AW71/turbo, or just because it's a 740. But then, it sounds like Pierce has a short one in his 240, so I'm still wondering - maybe it's one of my cars that has the wrong stick? Kind of a puzzlement...

our 240 is all original, we're the original owners. the tranny was rebuilt once, but they didn't swap the dipstick

that could be a subassembly number or something, that part number doesn't show up on Tascaparts at at, not even as superceded.
