Default Transmission Leak after overheat

Hey Folks,

I have a 92 940 dl. Today the car got really hot in traffic, had to put the heat on to keep it form overheating. May need a new thermostat, but for now that is a separate issue. When I finally got home the transmission started spewing fluid, not a lot but what did come out came out fast and furious. Also it was a brownish color. Anyway, I am wondering if this is related to the car almost overheating. I am definitely going to get the fluid changed, but not sure if this is common when overheating or if there is a larger issue at stake. Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Pat

Are you sure it's transmission fluid it's spewing? If so, where is it coming from?

There is a transmission cooler section built in the radiator. I have heard of rare occasions where the radiator develops a leak between the transmission cooler and the engine cooling sections of the radiator. I could imagine that if this happened, the pressure from the coolant side may have pressurized the transmission causing it to leak. If this indeed happened, it is extremely important to flush out transmission as the engine coolant in there will kill the transmission in no time.

You need to also diagnose why the engine overheated rather than just assume it was the thermostat.
