Default transmission number

well my auto gearbox in my 740 has finally crapped itself and i need a newie.

however, i have been told by the place i am sourcing the engine from that i need two things..
A) a transmission number (which i have been told is somewhere on the box itself, and
B) to see whether or not there is a half moon shape on the top of the bell housing.

i went and had a quick look and couldnt find either thing. now i know that the trans number is on a plate somehere but is it easily accessible without taking the box out and there was no half moon as far as i could tell.

i was also wondering, is the trans number somethine unique to each car or is it like a part number? and if it is, is it differend between euro, american, etc versions of the car or LHD/RHD versions. if it is, then could someone enlighten me on the trans number for a RHD australian version of the car and if it isnt, i need the standard transmission number for a 1988 740GL with the 4 speed auto.

sorry if i sound like a bit of a noob, it is cos, well, i am really and i just ned help geting my car to run!

Im not sure about the Half moon thing. Maybe they want to know it your car has a speed sensor. Then you would have a small half mood shaped in the top of the bellhousing.

There should be a plate on the side of the trans with a #like AW 70/71 or something like that.

It is on the left side. You might have to do some cleaning to read it. There should be like a rivet looking thing in the middle of it.
