Default Transmission Problem

My 1989 240DL Transmission is not performing the final shift. This appear to be an intermittent problem. On the dash, the orange shift up indicator (arrow) is illuminated although the gear selector is in "D"rive. Occasionally, the arrow begins to flicker and dim. When this occurs, the transmission make the final shift. Anyone have any idea what is up with this? It is hard to believe the tranny is going bad.

Overdrive relay located behind the Passenger side A/C vents. You will need to remove the Glove box to get to it.

Thanks for the Tip. I'll look for it. Can you give me a description of what this switch looks like. Also, I would like to know what are the typical failure modes (e.g., shorts out, reset, etc.) or is it a remove / replace (R&R) type item.

UPDATE: I was just informed by a local IMPORT Car Repair shop that if my car did not have an overdrive button on the gear shifter, most likely the car doesn't have an overdrive transmission. I'm confused! The gear selector have 1, 2, and D. With the selector in the "D" position, it changes gears two times. Just the other day it shifted a third time and engine RPM's lowered. Therefore, something [gear] is sticking.

Is there an overdrive relay for this tranny?

If you have it, overdrive isn't a gear that you sellect with the stick but rather a button on the side of the **** itself. It blends in pretty good so it's not surprising if you missed it.
