I have a 1989 volvo 740 gle.the problem im having with my transmission is it wont go into the final gear when im on the freeway.can anyone help me...please

I would suggest you start by checking the level of your transmission fluid. Second, have you accidentally depressed the small switch on the left side of the gear selector? I manually over-rides shifting into 4th gear for towing purposes. If you have, you will notice an orange UP arrow lit on the right side of the instrument cluster.

Fluid level is good,and the trans oil and filter is new,and the button on the side of the gear selector is in the right position.do you know if theres some kind of shift solenoid?

 

There are 2 places to look. There is a OD relay in the fuse area below the radio that usually goes bad. The default is not to up shift to 4th gear and OD. Then there is a solenoid on the transmission that diverts the fluid to 4th gear OD. Check those first to see if one is bad. With the key on ACC press the button on the shifter and you should hear the relay under the radio click. Start there.
