Default Transmission Problems at >35 mph?

Hello - I have a friend with a 240 and a problem... "when I go more than about 35mph it starts acting funny. The engine will get unusually quiet and be unresponsive to more gasthen it will rev up a lot withoutincreasing the car's speed then kick forward. That little cycle will repeat without any overall increase in speed or regulation of motor activity. Isuspect that the transmission is just going out."

Any thoughts?

Thanks for the info! The transmission fluid levels have been topped up, but it has not been flushed. Any thoughts? Is flushing synonomous with draining and refilling?
