Default Trunk latch woes.

Hey everyone,

I've got a 1987 240DL. The body is a little rough, the seat heaters do not work, a hose that I haven't really identified is broken, and it intermittently rattles, which I determined to be a seemingly useless piece of metal attached to the exhaust. I think I will cut it off. Other than that, it runs fantastically.

Anyways, I'm a motorcycle mechanic by trade, but I've owned this car for a couple years and I love it. I want to restore it.

The point of this post is the most irritating problem to me so far, the trunk latch has detached from the trunk lid. I've been fooling with the latch for a while now, trying to figure out how it operates so I can reinstall it.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I believe the latch is held on with a C clip on the backside.

Well I believe on the hump trunk 240's its a cam plate and a striker style. SOme are like what I described. They are held in by two bolts and sometimes a C-Clip. The other style is like this. Which I haven't seen in person. So I don't know exactly how it works.

Okay, so i managed to coax the lock barrel assembly out of the hatch. One bolt wasn't too much of a struggle.

I've taken some pictures of the offending assemblies. The big ugly black thing is the part that came off, it is what actually engages into the latch bar. The piece with the white plastic contains the key barrel, and is supposed to interact magically with the former ugly black thing. I've been playing with the two pieces for long enough, and still can't seem to figure out what makes the latch lock/unlock, or how they mesh together to create one nice locking hatch family.

I'm aware that I'm missing a tab to attach the ugly black thing to the hatch lid, but I'll deal with that later.

So here's the pics. Yes, this is irritating me more than anything else wrong with my car, and no, I do not like simply buying a replacement, even from a junkyard. I firmly believe that with enough patience, you can fix anything. My motorcycles are a testament to that thought.
