turbo bearings?

Well, I'd definitely pull the plugs to see if the oil is being burned in the combustion chamber or is just bypassing the seals in the turbo. As Lev says, much could go wrong with the HG replacement. A lot could go wrong depending on what was going on when the HG failed. How hot did the motor get and for how long. Did anyone check to see if the cylinders got "gallded" from the heat? If it was a gross failure into the cylinders, the coolant will wash the oil off of the cylinders and rings and thoroughly thrash the motor in no time. I see you're in the UK so your 98 should have the B230GT motor. If by any chance you have the manual transmission M90 in your car and you decide to break the car, please note that the transmission is worth $1500.00 US plus shipping here in the USA. 1995 was the last year of the 940 here in the states and last year for 4 cylinder turbos...and we never got the stout M90 transmission.

The car did get very hot when the HG went, but it wasn't driven very far, maybe 5-10 miles at the most, the oil doesn't seem to be coming out all the time and it's just passed an MOT - emisssions were fine, it's when you put your foot down on a motoroway etc. that the oil comes out, not under normal low speed conditions. Unfortunately it's an auto, but thanks for the tip.
