Default turbo, performance, junk yard upgrades ?

I own a 88 740 turbo waggy and was woundering, what psi the stock turbo is producing ? Is there any upgrades for the stock turbo ? is there a bigger turbo that would work with little to no mods ? Is there any upgrade parts that would be easy to swipe off another car ? junk yard upgrades ? thanks

7 to 8 psi
Cheaper to buy a new turbo than to try and upgrade the old one.
No not really, bigger turbo's take fuel and ecu upgrades.
90+ manifold if you can find one that isn't cracked.

The 1st thing on the list should be a good tune up.Plugs/wires/dist cap/rotor button/ fuel filter/air filter,be sure and use quality parts not the cheap stuff.

The 2nd thing is a good 3" free flowing exhaust system,if you live were there is no emissions testing get rid of the cat and the resonator.

3rd turn the boost up to around 12psi ,the engine needs to be in good tune and good overall mechanical condition,if it's not...it wont last long.

If most of the 90 manifolds crak wouldn't i want to stay away from a part prone to failure ? how do you turn up the bost ? my car has 350,xxx kilometers on it so should i consider a rebuild before upping my boost ? otherwise the car runs great and isn't burning any oil or anything. I'm considering buying another motor and rebuilding it for performance but have no idea where to buy the parts and which parts would be best

WEll the crack is on the back by the foil. Usually hairline cracks that don't make much of a difference. And once you port them out for a T3 frame to fit you won't have any more problems with cracking. They are a nice upgrade.

Though at 218,000 miles I wouldn't mess with it really. I mean you can turn it up, but I would start to get together another motor.

And I've said this before i'll say it again. The things people usually want out of a performance car is for it to be cheap, reliable and fast. You can only have two of those at a time.

how do you turn it up ? okay so i'm going to look for a 90 and up 740 turbo intake then ? Isn't the turbo from a 90 and up a t4 mitsubishi ? I'm sure i can find one at a pick n pull yard for dirt cheap. i was also woundering if its easy to swap to a 16 valve head or is it worth the effort ? Also If i have to pick 2 of the 3 then i'll choose reliable and fast !!!! lol where and what would you guys do if you had a spare block to build up ?

I'll tell you how to turn up the boost...if you promise to post a pic of the big azz hole in the side of the block.

You need a mbc(manual boost controller)15 bucks and up,Google it.
Good aftermarket boost gauge, the stock Volvo one's are crap.

Remove the vacuum line that runs from the wastegate to the turbo's compressor housing.(see pic)The mbc goes between the two,it will come with instructions that will show you how to install it.

Now back to your other questions.

Yes the 90+ had mitsu turbos, this is why you need to port the manifold.
I'm not getting into the 16v thing.
As to what kind of engine to build up...as the old saying goes: Speed cost money how fast you wanna go?
Whats your budget?

Well I'd like around 400 horse and am thinking of a 2 to 3 year build I built my 77 jeep cj5 too fast and wish i would have taken much more time with it. I will do the body on my volvo in the spring and get a new block, from there i'll start with a the usual bore out (which i need to find out more info on for these motors),h beam rods ect.. and go from there. wouldn't it be better to just use the mitsi turbo ? or build a t3/t4 hybrid ? This is my first turbo car and a volvo so it's not like building a chevy v8 so i could use lots of advise and help. thanks dan

Brand new turbos: http://www.atpturbo.com/
Trans adapters, BBK adapters etc: http://www.avalancheperformance.com/
Cheap silicone adapters: http://www.siliconeintakes.com/
Suspension stuff: http://www.kaplhenke.com/
Motor sutff: http://www.knoxmotorsports.us/
Everything: http://yhst-26451710505916.stores.yahoo.net/

You will need a programable ecu: like megasquite or haltech, to reach 400whp.
Though some people have over 300whp on chipped LH2.4 systems.
RSI has pretty nice engine stuff. They just redid our head and it is pretty nice.
Stuff does cost some money....400whp is a pretty nice achievement.
you might want to read some build thread over at turbobricks.com
some have good info and parts to copy to get to those numbers.

If you run LH 2.4, you can get 230hp with chips, boost and a cam.
No need to touch anything else.
400hp is a LOT from a redblock, it will not just be a bolt together and run it effort. It will need proper engine prep and machining and PROPER tuning.

Regards, Andrew.

You're not going to get 400 horsepower out ov a redblock unless you go 16v. And even then you're going to need some sort of standalone engine management. And a big turbo, and just about everything else. Probably looking at a few grand.

300 hp on an 8v redblock is doable and you can keep it under 2000. People seem to think that 300 hp doesn't feel like much but its pretty substantial. Also with a 740 your rear subframe is going to start coming apart at those types of numbers.

This happens at over 300 RWHP.

okay so i'd have to watch out for cracking the rear sub frame ? I'm a welder by trade so i'm sure i could come up with away of supporting this but even so i think i might back down from the 400 hp goal and go with as closs to 300 as i can . what parts will i need to make this ? thanks
