There are not many diesels left.

Alot of them have been converted to Gas engines.

i don't see why you would convert a diesel to gas...
1. Diesel fuel is cheaper (here in MD at least)
2. you get MUCH better fuel economy on a diesel

currently, out of the top 5 cars in the US on gas mileage, 2 of them are diesels and 2 of them are hybrids...actually, a diesel VW Golf gets better fuel economy than my 2006 Toyota Prius hybrid

They were converted over MANY MANY years ago.
If something happened to the engine it was cheaper to convert to gas than keep the Diesel.

The diesel engine for the 240 series was manufactured by Puegot (?). The primary reason most are no longer running... 200k miles was/is highly unusual. Most blew out around 75-125k miles. Some even sooner.

Not by Peugeot, it was a VW Truck engine.. straight 6. If several "rules" were followed, the engine would go to 240k before a short block was required.
