Do you think the V4s were good engines?

 

First off it isn't a V-4 it is an inline 4.

These engines are very reliable if taken car of. Can easily hit between 500,000 to 1000,000 miles.

 

If you had a choice would you rather have a V4 or in line 4?

I've owned 4 Volvos. My first was a 265 whose engine had a lot of torque, but had problems unlike my three 240s with inline engines thathave flawlessly outlasted the creature comforts. When something works for you I guess there's need to change. I saw an otherwise great deal, but I don't know about the V-4s.

 

Yea as far as i know no one has ever made a V-4. 4 cylinder engines are always inline and they are extremely reliable. My '82 240 has an inline 4 and has 220k on it and runs great. I also have a '76 Toyota Corolla with an inline 4 that runs absolutely perfect.

 

Maybe he has his car confused with a subaru which has a horizontaly opposed 4 cyl.

 

The only V4 engined car I can think of was the Ford Corsair, made in the UK between 1965 and 1967.

 

Perhaps the original poster was thinking of the Saab Sonnett; and somehow got to the wrong Swedish Auto Forum. Some of you may remember the Sonnett, a strange "quirky" looking car from the 60s through early 70's. It had the Fomoco V4 that was found in a few other cars such as the Corsair. The original Sonnet had the same engine as the 93; a 3 cylinder 2 stroke. Talk about "quirky"!

 

Hey, those three-cylinders were alright. Quite an exhaust note though.

KG, if you saw a Volvo advertised with a V4 then that person probably didn't really know what a V-engine is. A lot of people don't, they just think that "V" is what you say before however many cylinders the car has. It was weird explaining that to my father last night, he's like sixty and he didn't know that.

 

A few motorcycle engines were V4's. And there are a ton of a marine engines that are V4's.
