Hi guys, I'm new here. Have just recently bought an '89 Volvo 740 GLE 2.3.

It's got the standard 740 14" alloys on at the moment and the tyres (185/70/14) are a little bit on the low side but seem to be getting a bit plasticy more than anything, so on these cold/wet/icy roads feels a bit twitchy and unstable.

My Dad has a set of Volvo 240 15" alloys (195/60/15) from a previous car. What I need to know is will these fit on a 740?

I did try to check them today, but after jacking the car up, taking wheelnuts off I couldn't get the wheel to budge at all!!! Think it has corroded to the hub in the centre. Is the best way to remove the wheels to lossen the wheel nuts just slightly and roll it down the drive a bit?

You should be able to swap the wheels. no problems.
Theyshould havethe same bolt pattern (5x108) and should have the same offset (~20mm).

 

No problem with the swap. As far as the getting them off, be SUPER careful! Loosen them up very little and roll the car just may be a few feet or you may ruin the studs. How much is "very little"? I'd try it progressively, i.e. a little bit, then a little more, until you have success.
