does the car have the stock 14" rims? P195/75R14, 92S or T.
there's a fairly limited selection in those these days, sigh.
If you have 15" rims (optional aftermarket, or volvo OEM dealer options), then P205/65-15 94T or 94S will work nicely. The rims off most any Volvo 740/940, they'll bolt right on and be perfect. if you get aftermarket rims, they have to have the correct offset as well as bolt pattern, the wheels from a front wheel drive Volvo will NOT work without spacers.

ah. 185/75r14 is the standard size on a 240 sedan. wagons actually got the larger, and heavier duty 195/75-14 but those are somewhat hard to find.
on P185/75R14 89S...
with 185's, your wagon's speedometer probably reads just a hair higher than your actual speed, since it was calibrated for the slightly larger 195's (bigger tire goes farther per turn). more specifically, the 185's are 835 turns/mile, while the 195's are 815 turns/mile. if you are actually going 60MPH, with the 185s, your speedometer will read 61.4MPH. thats a pretty small error, well within most people's 5MPH tolerance.
P195/75R14 has become a fairly rare size, so a lot of people will substitute the 185's. so yeah, you can use 185/75R14 snowtires. For summer use, P205/70R14 would be closer to the standard wagon diameter but slightly wider, and is typically a 93 or 95 load factor tire.
on P185/75R14 89S...
- P means passenger tire
- 185 is the sectional width of the tire
- 75 is the 'aspect ratio' (smaller number is a lower profile tire, and has a shorter sidewall)
- R means its a radial
- 89 is the load factor, larger number handles more weight safely
- S is the speed rating. S is 112MPH, T is 118MPH. H is 130MPH, V is 150MPH, and Z is over 150. there are others, but these are the most common.

Does it matter the year of the 740/940?
Thanks again

only the last 2 years of 960 when they got the facelift that looks like the S90/V90 use the FWD offset. no US model 940 used the FWD offset, although there were some in the rest of the world, these would be later than 1995.
all the rest of the 740, 760, 940, 960 and of course, all 240's use the same bolt pattern and offset. the wheels are fully interchangable, except you can't put 14" 240 wheels on 7x0/9x0 models that have the bigger front brakes, like the turbos.
