Hello I am new to this Forum today, I bought a 1988 Volvo 740 Turbo Estate at the weekend and there are a few things I would like to swap out.

One thing I am not a fan of this the windscreen wipers below the headlights, can I use the headlights off any other model that would be a full headlight to replace that gap like on the earlier 240 model?

later 740's and the very similar 940's had either single rectangular headlights, or rectangular plus integral foglamp headlights. none of these are interchangable without also changing the turn signals, grill, and really the hood too as the different versions have a different sized 'beak' on the hood

1990 740 was the first year for the single rectangular design, but its different than the later ones.

this is the 1991+ single rectangular look (my 1992 740 turbo wagon)

(note those small foglamps below the bumper are my own addition)

this is the 1991+ rectangular+fog look (a 1991 940SE, which is really a 960... the late 760's and all 960's have a completely different hood that hides the wipers and cowl vents... but this same headligth design was used on upscale 940 models with a conventional hood)


anyways, its non-trivial to change out any of these. in fact, I'm not even sure if the fender lines weren't changed circa 1990 or 1991, such that the newer front turn signals won't fit in 1988 fenders

 

oh, just realized, you might not be in the USA.... I was ssuming you had a US version like

I'd just remove the wipers if you don't want them, and plug the holes with something. maybe JB Weld a strip of metal to the back, and fill the front of the hole in with some body filler, sand and paint.


edit: hmm, that last pic, looks like someone put the wrong euro lights on that car, note the turn signals don't quite fit.

 

It should be just a matter of removing the wipers and arms and plugging the little hole with the appropriate size plastic cap. I am sure you can source a generic cap to fit in there. To look for a whole new light fixture just to avoid that seems pretty wasteful. The US style version lights that cover the whole area are plastic while yours are glass, and trust me the plastic ones are crap as they fade and yellow after a few years. The Euro spec lights are highly sought after in the US for that reason--you are better off with what you have.

 

I like how pierce just magically produced 3 740 pictures showing different headlight styles all with about the same view of the car.
