Volvo B230E Oil
#2
I seen nothing in the owners manual about 20w-50, the one I read stated 15w-40.

Thanks for the reply. I've got a autodata manual and it's stated in there
Would this be semi synthetic? I've done an oil change and used 10w40 and its made the engine noisy. It could be because I'm running it without the fan attached and it's done 175k.
How fussy are these engines on viscosity?
Thanks,
Dan

When it's rev'd up and then listen to just at the start of over run. There is 4-5 slight clatter noise. I know it's not the easiest to hear.
I did notice the mounts seem soft... it doesn't idle brilliantly at the moment, I think the ignition timing needs looking at and rocks like a good 'un. How can you tell if the mounts are nackard? The last 240 I had the metal plate detached from the rubber so it was quite obvious
Thanks,
Dan

if the rubber part of the mount is cracking, thats pretty much time to replace. they are rather weak motor mounts.
as far as the clatter goes, I dunno, it could be piston slap. they'll do that for a LONG time before they finally fail, and the best fix is simply to find a new engine out of a wrecker yard or something. it /could/ be a loose or worse too tight valve, those can be shimmed, but if a valve has tightened up, odds are something is wrong, and you'll end up needing a valve job (or a used engine)

Thanks for the advice.
I'm not to worried at the moment, it's not that bad. It's a project car anyway so it would be an excuse to put a more powerful engine in it.
The mounts look very old, grey and perished. It's not split but you can rock the engine easily side to side.
I'll put some new mounts on it
Thanks again,
Dan
