What is this hose for?????????????
Howdy Everyone,
Gosh, it's been a while since I posted. My volvo has been good to me. Today I noticed a pipe/tube hanging down from the engine. I found it to be a ceramic tube that runs from the air intake box to just under the exhaust manifold. I went to pep boys to replace it but they didn't have one. The car still drives fine. Is it ok to drive it? What is that thing? Where do I get it? Thanks for any and all replies.

That hose feeds warmer air from around the exhaust, into the air filter box. Improves driveability during warmup.
BUT it's a major Bad Thing to feed the warm air all the time. This can coat the AMM wire on Bosch FI cars, and cut power on Regina cars (and everyone knows that normally aspirated Volvos could use every ounce of power). [sm=drooldude.gif]
Mine is not ceramic, it is a flexible metal tube similar to the ones they sell for clothes dryers.
Anyway, on my car it was easy to see if the thermostatic valve was opening and closing properly. Just remove the plastic duct inboard of the air box when warm...the flap should be positioned so that cool air from the front grill enters the air filter. If not, buy a new valve from the "usual suspects"...costs about 10 bux IIRC.
