What's Interchangeable Between a 240 and 740 Wagon?
Hi folks. I'm a newbie here, and my question is a non-mechanic newbie question.
I just bought a 1989 240 DL Volvo wagon. I also have a 1990 740 Volvo wagon that has a blown head gasket. Cosmetically, the 740 has seen better days.
What mechanical parts can I take from the 740 and use on the 240? I had all new brake rotors put on the 740 before the head gasket blew. Can I use those on the 240? What else from the engine or chassis could I use?
If these are dumb questions, my apologies. I'm probably gonna junk the 740. But would like to have it stripped of useable parts before that, if they are indeed useable parts.
Thanks for your time and consideration.
Kind regards,
David.

the engine(*) and transmission compatible. front and rear suspension are different. wiring harnesses are very different. both those cars use LH 2.4 fuel injection and EZ116k ignition controllers, (unless that 740 is Regina), so the ECU and ICU are close enough.
pretty sure the 740 will have bigger brake rotors and calibers than the 240 (240's use 14" wheels, 740 have 15" with optional 16" on some turbos).
interiors are totally different. relay panels, 240's don't have one, they have relays randomly placed behind the dashboard.
(*) 740 has the distributor on the camshaft, while 240 has it on the side of the block. you can swap the 240 distributor onto the 740 engine, and put the cover plate over the camshaft end onto the new engine. but your 740 has a blown head gasket, so not sure you'd want to use that engine.

Engine, transmission, a few interior tabs (kick panel tabs match some of the 240s), power window/heated seat switches (get some light up 960 switches for some neat stuff), and the wheels.
Little to anything else is compatible between them, surprisingly enough. 'Tis a shame, I wouldnt mind a 940 with the 240s headliner.
