This piece has been kicking around in my car since I bought it. I can't figure out where it belongs. Could it be that it doesn't belong to my car at all? If it does belong somewhere within my '92 940, where?

This is the Left Hand (LH) cover for your rear tail light. The one inside the trunk area.

 

So I took a look. My tail light covers don't look like the spare part.

As far as I can tell, all panels are accounted for.

 

maybe it's a coaster for your tea glass when your mom or grandmother is riding with you

 

Could be cover for a tail light, but not this car's tail lights. Definitely not a coaster and those women wouldn't be caught dead in my beater.

 

I have a 92 940 also, it goes on the trunk lid for the tail lights.

 

The LID, oh, the lid... All these times I've looked, I've never looked up.

Going back out to the car now to check it out
