Default Where is the tensioner for the A/C drivebelt.

Hey, I have looked and looked and can't find anywhere to tension the A/C /power steering drivebelt on my 83 240 DL. It is the over/under pulley system on the drivers side of the motor. Any light shed on it is greatly appreciated.

I think you adjust the position of the power steering pump. Check on it for an adjustable mount.

Trying to adjust the a/c belt tension on an old York will have you scratching your head the first time for sure. There is no tensioner per se. There are shims under the bolts that you move from the outside to the inside to stretch the belt tighter. It's a righteous pain, to be sure.

Can I upgrade it to one of the newer setups with the actual tensioner on it?

Sure can! Getting rid of the old York is a great improvement if you're running R134a. The old Yorks were bullet proof and worked fine w/ R12. Not so good w/ R134a. Not precisely sure what year the switch occurred but certainly by 89. You can get the compressor from a 240 or 740...same style unit. The 2 main brands were Diesel/Kiki and Siemens...either one will do fine.

So, I need to steal the mounting brackets and the whole nine yards off of a newer one. (89&up)

Is my old power sterring pump gonna hook up the same or will I need to grab one of those too?

Can I go ahead and swap the power steering pump while i'm at it. There are several units at my local pull a part I can hit up. Where can I go to find out exactly what year the changeover happened. Will I have to change out my crank pulley too? Derek

I'll tell you right now it didn't change in 89! Just got done replacing an AC compressor off of an 89 with one from an 86, and it was the exact same set-up.
