Default white smoke from turbo itself and from exhaust at idle '94 940

Ok so I just noticed today while I was sitting at the drive-through, white smoke coming from my car. After I get home, I put it in drive with the e-brake on to simulate the conditions under which it happened and it started smoking out of the tail pipe, white smoke with some moisture. It also was smoking from under the hood from the turbo itself. I can only assume that its coolant leaking past some seal in the turbo. Any input would be great... bringing it in to the shop tomorrow. Thank you! It is a 1994 945T with 166,000 miles and the original turbo as far as i am aware. There is no coolant in the oil and no oil in the coolant reservoir.

Well, have them test the engine coolant for hydrocarbons. Hope that it is the turbo as it could certainly be a head gasket.

Hey Swift, thanks for the reply. I figured it would be either the Turbo or the headgasket, but since i can see the white smoke coming from the turbo itself, I am hoping it is that and NOT the headgasket. I made a video with my phone, but can't figure out how to upload it here... I just dropped the car off at the shop, will know tomorrow I guess. Thanks again!

Age wise...if the HG has never been replaced, it's due. Every now and then I hear people complain that Volvos are prone to head gasket issues. Shoot, how many cars are on the road after 15-25 years? Let alone turbos...the turbo will be cheaper, especially if you can get a good used one...would be a good time to upgrade if you want the power.

Default Update

So I had my volvo guy service the car today... He was able to duplicate it, only happens under load (car in drive, foot on brake, during a long idle period) no smoke upon cold start up or during acceleration. He didn't have too much time to look into it, but things the PCV system could be clogged, that side of the IC hose was a little wet with oil. Or, could be some oil leaking past valve seals and being burned, Or, the turbo is just starting to go.. Said he has seen some 850's do it, and his own S70 will smoke a bit under the same situation... Going to just ride it out for a while and see what happens. Will have PCV system addressed first. Need to order parts. I live in a city where the nearest Volvo dealer is 180 miles away.

The head gasket on the 745T went for the first time because of age... It let go around 236,000miles back in 06. I almost lost another, but replaced it when the new head went on.

pcv system is possible...
