Building up the top end of my 2.9L six cylinder motor and wondering how much and best way to apply chemical sealant on cam/valve cover?

I used a foam rubber paint roller. Worked very well. They have these really small ones now, and inch by two inches.

Only use the Volvo brand though, it has a long open time, is brightly colored to allow for a visual inspection of coverage, gets rock hard when required.

Use denatured alcohol to do the final cleaning and oil removal.

Thank you Dan,

I already purchased sealant from FC Groton.....this stuff is not hard after a couple of days though.....I had the cover on and accidently sandwiched one of the wires in the rear while tightening down, had to remove and noticed my original application of the sealant was really bad- plugged oil holes. I'll do the roller application this time- thanks! Does this stuff harden after the engine is warmed up? Should I junk the sealant I purchased?

I found that the Volvo product stayed liquid for ever, even the roller I used wrapped in plastic stayed soft three years later. You do not want to put so much on that it plugs holes, especially the oil passages. So maybe it was a good thing that a wire fouled it up.

The Volvo product hardens quickly in the absence of oxygen. So once those parts come in tight contact the goop is triggered to harden. As soon as I was done with assembly the engine was started.

Is the stuff you used orange in color, kind of like a dreamcicle?
