740 keeps shutting off

740 keeps shutting off

I drive a 1990 volvo 740. AS long as my foot is on the gas, it runs fine. Take foot off, it slowly putters and shuts off. Any ideas? Also, it is slow to crank at first. Have to give gas for a bit.
