Default 760 GLE Estate Diesel Resurrection

Bought this car cheap, and not running. This thread is hopefully going to document the resurrection of the sparkless brick. Wish me luck, and if you have any helpful tips, be sure to pass them along. Here it is when I brought it home.

First update. Found the key!!! Great news. Car will crank over, but not start. All electrics seem to work, windows, sunroof, wipers, lights. Problem with starting is that the injection pump will not suck fuel. I hooked up a vac pump, and can draw fuel, so I know it's getting there. Being a self priming pump, it should have flow by now. Looks like it's time for either just a reseal (if it's sucking air) or a rebuild (don't want to go there).

Good luck with it please keep us updated.

Not many people here have the diesel's because they are getting so rare.

So also not many know how to work on them either.

I haven't really even worked on any either. Just oil changes and brakes thats about it.

I can't really tell from the pictures, and I've never seen a diesel in a Volvo, but is that an inline or rotary fuel pump? Looks inline from the pics.

Also check your glow plugs and if they use ultra low sulphur diesel in your area (I know they do here in Texas) I saw a few articles saying that that specific brand had the best lubricating properties out of a bunch of different chemicals to keep your fuel pump healthy.

Look here http://www.johnfjensen.com/Diesel_fu...itive_test.pdf

Keep your diesel healthy and unphased by the 15 whopping PPM of sulphur (a lubricant) in the new diesel as opposed to the 500PPM in the regular low sulphur diesel. This new diesel will kill your fuel system if you don't use additives.

It's a rotary pump, a Bosch VE. Glow circuit seems to work, at least the light does. Working on Mercedes diesels seems to be a bit easier, maybe because I'm familiar with them. I'm sure the same principles apply. Hmmm, not sure I like the idea of having a rare car that hardly anybody knows anything about. This is going to be a wild ride. It may be awhile though, since I have other projects as well. Stay tuned for the next episode.. lol

Good luck! I'll definately stay tuned. I have limited experience with diesels, but I know someone who knows them inside and out lol.

I can tell you that the seals in the rotary pumps fail more frequently and easier than those in an inline pump. Being that old of a car, that's probably your culprit.

There is no fuel getting to the pump, soI have to figure that out first. I can suck it through the line with the vac pump, so there is nothing wrong with the tank or input line to the filter. I thought that it would self prime the fuel up to the IP, but so far nothing. Tomorrow if I'm lucky, I'll remove the fuel filter and replace it. Got the Mercedes running, FWIW. [sm=happy046.gif]

Final update. Sold the car to somebody, who gave me this tip. When the feed portion of the IP goes out, such as this one did, people hook up an inline fuel pump to overcome the feed portion. I haven't tried it, but he claims a shop has done over 10 of these on VW's. Oh well, if it works, better to him. Time to look for another one. Sucks that this is the second wagon I've sold that I wanted to keep. Too many projects kept me from hanging on to this one.
