Default '87 760 Turbo Transmission question

Recently thetransmission started losing a lot of fluid and I took it to my volvo mechanic and he told me it's coming out of the breather tube on the transmission. He cleaned the underside, drove it around and says it looks like the fluid is overheating and spewing out the top. He said he could isntall a radiator for the tranny to help fix this problem. Does this sound right? It was working great for so long without a cooler and it needs one? I changed the radiator about a year ago and I did notice the tranny cooler in it was a little smaller than the original one it had. Can this be the cause of the problem? Would appreciate any ideas/help. Thanks.
