960 Head gasket issues?
I recently acquired a 1996 960 with 250,000 miles.
Dealer maintained and very clean.
I'm seeing the tan color on my dipstick and assume the head gasket needs replacement.
Can somebody give me an idea of what a head gasket replacement should run for this car?
I'd love to keep this car on the road....

Hi Craig, welcome to the forum.
There is nothing wrong with the car and it does not need a head gasket. That is a very common scare but the truth is that the sludge on the dipstick is caused by condensation in the dip stick tube. You can reduce that by replacing the seal on the dip stick and the seal at the base of the tube.
If you do not see oil in your coolant, experience overheating, see chocolate milk in the oil that has been drianed from the oil pan, or the car is attempting to hide the cars that follow you with a large cloud of grey smoke, keep driving and smiling.
Congrats on the purchase of your 960, I really miss mine. Now for the #1 tip for the life of that car...... Only use Volvo or Mann oil filters on it.
If you still want the cost estimate of a head gasket replacement let us know and we'll post back.

Thanks RSPI for the information.
Your explanation clears up several observations and it all makes sense to me now. Replacing those seals will be top on my list.
The 960 is a joy to drive and I hope will be around for a long time (yes I use Volvo filters and parts).
I also own a 1964 1800S that I bought back in 1981.
Looking forward to visiting Volvo Forums on a regular basis.
