My 97 960 appears to be missing the ECT on the rear of the head. Wiring diagram for a 1996 shows one there, but I can't find a sensor or wire in that area. There is a hole in the head about the size of a quarter, and just above it is a threaded 12mm hole. Did Volvo make a change from 96 to 97 on these 6304 engines? Can anyone help or direct me to a site to download a wiring diagram for the 97 year.

 

The original set up was a sensor at the rear of the head for the computer and another sensor at the t-stat for the dash gauge.

But with the conversion to OBii diagnostics in 1996 they went with one sensor at the t-stat for both uses. So while your diagram may show it, there is only an unused depression in the head where the original was located.

Thanks Dan. I though that might be the case, since I didn't see anything there when I removed the head except the 14mm bolt which doesn't seem to do anything. From what I have read on line, a bad ECT would explain the way this thing is running. Giving serious though to setting it on fire and claiming the insurance.Taking it to a repair shop would require the sale of one of my vital organs. shade tree
