Default 960 Smoke from defrost vents. (!)

Hello, all.

Took the 960 out for a drive the other day and when I returned home I noticed smoke coming from the defrost vents. The smoke was certainly electrical (not coolant related). Has anyone had this happen before? Any solutions?

I'm a little weary of driving it.

Thanks for any help!

What does it smell like? Does any debris come out of the vents? Does this happen in any other setting (e.g. front grilles or foot grilles)?

It smells like an electrical fire.

The fan wasn't on and the setting was at the front vents. Recirc was on.

How dangerous do you think it would be to drive it? I'm carrying a fire extinguisher just to be safe.

Most likely the blower fan has either died or is about to and drawing way too many amps. Check the fuse block. I've seen blowers melt the fuse completely through the block. If you see damage at all, pull the fuse...smoke should stop if that's the issue.

It sounds like the Vacuum controller unit. It is not uncommon for this unit to go bad. Solder joints are weak, which results in overheated circuitboards, and random control of airflow direction.
