My sunroof is leaking on my forehead, any tips or suggestions?

 

The seal might be bad. When they go bad it will leak through and onto the bolts holding the glass to the selector gates.

 

Does the sunroof have to be removed to replace the seal?

 

Yes it does. It might just be easier to find a junk yard glass with a good seal. Look good around where the screws are. When it leaks you can see like white power looking or rust.
If you find one with none you might be good.

 

I don't think its the seal. In most cars when the sunroof is leaking, the problem is the drains in the corners. The seal around the sunroof is not waterproof. its only preventing the wind to make noise.

On the 960 when the seal goes bad water gets between the seal and the glass. Then when it drips off it is not in the tub area where it can drain. It drips on the inside section and into the car.

 

Maybe the seal is a problem in Florida because of the heat But here in Norway (Europe) I've never heard that the seal is the problem here. The sunroof was leaking on my 960 and the problem was the drains, also my 940 and my old saab. I have friends with 740-760-940-960 and the problem on their cars was the drains. I'm only talking about my own personal experience.

 

LOL! oddeee84, Don't give up the fight! LOL It gets very hot here in Arkansas as well as humid. We get about 5" of rain per month except for this year. We've had more rain than the past 100 years. Something like 9" per month. It's rained almost every day this summer.

Well, while it is leaking, the sunroof is closed, it is raining, the sunroof shade is pulled back, and water drips in on the driver side front corner on to my head. It can drip to a rate of a drop per minute. The location gives it no chance to get near a drain.

The good thing is that it does not leak when the car is in the garage, where is sits most of the time since my wife really does not go anywhere.

Tech, not sure why it would be easier replacing the entire glass assy instead of the seal???

 

Both my selector gates are broken, and the sunroof leaks, unless the car is parked on on incline (nose high tail low) does this sound like drains or seals? Could the leaks contribute to the demise of the selector gates? Mine just leaks on the passenger side, usually down the A pillar.

 

Sounds like maybe a clogged drain.

 

The seal is a major PITA to get back on the glass right. Also not sure if they sell it anymore.

 

It is very possible it is like that over there. I do not see any cars from there.
But here it only affects the 960's and 850's like that.

 

I had a leaking sunroof which was a major pain. Had to pull out all the carpet because it was wet underneath and the headboard cause that was real soggy too. Did lots of annoying troubleshooting and I thought I had clogged drains and all that but it turned out to be just a cracked seal along the edge of the glass. Bought a $5 tube of sealant glue at an autoparts store and just applied it around the entire edge of the glass/seal perimeter and it never leaks now. Probably reapply it every few months just to keep it tight. I've heard that's pretty common. It dries clear so it's not that cosmetically a problem. I don't think you'd need to replace the entire glass/assembly etc. Too $$.

I am going to declare my sunroof seal repaired. Thanks to Tech, he put me on the right path. Next project is the selector gates. I did read in the UK forum where a guy just removed all the plastic part in the selector gates. He claims it works fine. I think I will stick with the replacement since I have the parts in hand.

I digress.

The only thing I did different was flatten a length with a putty knife.I did this on the sunroof glass and with plenty of soapy water in a spray bottle. Use the soapy water on any surface the butyl rope touches. Then I cut the flattened piece in half with a razor blade and tucked it in with an old credit card while using the putty knife to open up an unpatched area of the seal.

We have had plenty of rain since I did the repair, after the first attempt I did find 3 small drops on the passenger seat. I went back and patched suspect areas, so far no leaks.

I was on the UK Volvo forum and found this Captain Tolleys Creeping Crack Cure product. I would have gone this route first

I had the same problem 3 years ago. Took entire sunroof out of car and could not find a problem. Then I carefully lifted rubber seal around glass and put in silicone. NO MORE problem!

Where are the drains located? I noticed that I have been getting a drip through the dome light....literally through the switch openings....

 

They have drain holes forward and aft, all 4 corners. If something gets in the drain holes, water wont drain out when it seeps in between the seal and roof frame.

You could have a seal leak along the glass edge like I did. It may be dripping on your shade, then leaking into your light assembly. Is your roof liner wet? Check that next time it rains.

It's pretty easy to take the glass out and install another one that has a good seal. I purchased a sunroof with a good seal from a salvage yard for $50. When I went to pick it up they asked $100 for it but I reminded them they told me $50 so they honored that. The problem was that the mechanic gave me a roof for a 850. I would suggest taking a good look at your sunroof while it is raining, slide the shade all the way open, and see if you can see water dripping in on the glass edge. If you can not see water dripping in, it is likely a drain hole problem. If you see water dripping in, it is likely the seal.

This is on a '95 940 sedan

I started to try to fix a headboard that is drooping down in the back. I couldn't understand why the roof seemed a little shrunk. After attempting a fix of the headboard, now paying attention to the condition, the next rains have revealed a major leak! This has caused the headboard issue as water seems to drip off the headb. corner at varying rates.
No leakage around the sunroof itself(from inside car). When I pull back the interior cover everything is dry. Front drain holes are clear, still looking for the aft drain holes. I see that some of you have used glue for the seal around the glass...
It seems a lot of water is getting in, runs down between roof and headboard, and drains out into car under back corner of drooping headboard. Any suggestions?!
