'97 960 Air Pump Problem - Need Help !
I am in need of an air reciprocating pump (air pump/smog pump) for my '97 960. The CEL is lit on the dashboard and my mechanic tells me that the diagnostic code indicates the need for a new pump. First, I am wondering if his diagnosis is accurate ? Secondly, if it is accurate, he tells me that the cost of a new pump is around $800 (US dollars). I have seen them for less online. However, it seems that the prices are awfully high for such a small pump. I was also wondering if it is possible to get a pump through the members on this forum or if anyone knows whether getting a used pump could solve the problem. I cannot pass state vehicle inspection with the car in this condition (CEL on). Any help or suggestions will be welcome. Thanks.

Find out more details about the fault, verify his diagnosis? The air pump and monitor has several parts:
The air pump itself - could be relay, open circuit to relay or pump, pump just doesn't work?
The solenoid/valve - open circuit or just doesn't work?
Now the ECU will watch the oxygen sensor for the mix to go lean while the pump is running. In the absence of open circuits/shorts, this is the other way it knows something is wrong with the whole system.
If you think you need a new air pump test it on the bench with battery voltage first.
