Unhappy AC Light Flashing

I have a '88 760 Turbo. About 2 months ago, the AC light was flashing and after a tune-up and new fuel filter, (and a lot of money) I found out it was the Harmonic Balancer and had it replaced. Now the AC light is flashing again and my car is doing what it did before. It dies when I start it and I have to rev the engine to keep it running. When I'm at a stop light or idling, it tries to die. I know a continually flashing AC light means there is a major system failure, but what exactly could it be linked to? Is it only specific things that could be failing or does it mean anything in the car? Any info would be much appreciated. I just need a place to start.

Thanks!
